I found this top at Neiman Marcus when I was looking for an outfit to wear to a rehearsal dinner in Aspen. The rehearsal dinner was at an Italian restaurant, and couldn't have been more gorgeous. The bride and groom rented out the entire restaurant for the night. It was a wonderful night with candles and lots of laughter. I figured black was a safe choice, yet the outfit would be unique enough to stay true to my style. This isn't the kind of outfit you have to worry about someone else wearing at an event.
This top combines some of the hottest trends right now: velvet and bell sleeves, and is actually part of a two piece set. The designer, Nanette Lepore, designed this sheer top to be worn underneath a sleeveless dress. Which is how I styled the shirt for the rehearsal dinner. I will create a post wearing the dress once I have another occasion special enough to wear the full look. The shirt is completely sheer, and when worn with the dress you keep it that way. No cami. When you wear the top on its own, you obviously need to wear a cami underneath. I recently chose to pair it with a black cami for a night out. I've also worn the top with a nude colored cami and boyfriend jeans for a more casual look. If you're a little more on the wild side, you could pair it with a brami from Free People.
I suppose I have Nanette Lepore to thank for keeping me ahead of the trend curve with this look. She was way ahead of the game with this velvet/bell sleeves piece a year ago. Trends are fun, and it's easy to feel pressured to take part in the latest trend. I think that you should buy what you love. You should wear clothes that you love. Pieces that make you feel gorgeous. Which is how this shirt made me feel when I first tried it on. If you feel good about yourself, it doesn't really matter what's "trending" at the time.
